Challenge = OX-TREME:
OK, this is the toughest physical challenge that we offer, this is very physically demanding. This should ONLY be attempted by those in top physical condition. No exceptions! This is NOT a family fun tour. Expect 8 to 10 hours of hiking with a full backpack from 1 to 4 days of hiking. Technical trails with slippery slopes, rock scrambling and steep terrain can be expected.
Getting two birds with one stone, the exquisite high elevation views and the heart racing proximity to the summit of an angry beast (Volcan Fuego).
Professional guide, transportation, all camping gear*, lunch, dinner, breakfast, lunch again, and an epic time. *Bring a sleeping bag and backpack or borrow/rent one of ours!
This excursion takes you up to the top of Acatenango, the most beautiful volcano in all of Guatemala, and a tall one too at 13,044ft / 3,976m. And to the Angry - Active Volcan Fuego. We set up camp at "vista" camp where we have an all night view of Fuego, and enjoy the views and a glass of wine. Your guide decides which volcano to hit first, one for sunset and the other for sunrise. Get some sleep and then wake before sunrise hike with just a small bag and some water / snacks to the peak of one of these mighty volcanoes. Either head up to the summit of Acatenango or head down the steep slopes descending to Volcan Fuego and the knife-ridge while relishing the views in the shadow of Volcan Acatenango. Finish your trek with a beautiful high-alpine traverse descending around the two peaks of Acatenango. An ineteresting - beautiful and challenging trek. Arrive back in Antigua at a reasonable early afternoon the second day. After this trip you should have a Double Whammy of shots at the Base Camp terrace to celebrate! Finally you can relax and look at the mountains you just ascended like a bad-ass (Minimum 4 people) Contact us to help you find more folks.
*special note: the details of this tour can change depending on the season and the decisions of your OX Guide. Things change, chaos happens and we adapt to changing environments.
Damage: (U.S.) $129.
FITNESS: This is an OX-TREME TOUR. Please do not even think about this unless you are in damn good physical fitness at the time of your trip. The exception is if you are hiring porters. Since the Fuego Volcano is in such close proximity to Acatenango, this tour can be done easily due to our “in-between” camp site, VISTA CAMP. It is a very long day with conditions that can change suddenly and place extra tax on the body.
SLEEP: BOOK a BED at our Base Camp for the night before so you can just roll out of bed at whatever awful hour in the morning (6am departure for overnight tour, 5am departure for day trips) and we store your bags in big burly lockers. :) Starting at $8. per night.
WATER: 6 liters minimum and snacks (chocolate bar, nuts, etc.) for 3 rest breaks. YES, we said SIX liters. This is simply because there is no melting snow on these volcanoes so all water must be taken with us. If it is dry season, you will drink all this water over two days. Rainy season sometimes requires less.
GEAR: Have comfortable hiking clothing, preferred is non-cotton clothing. As you progress up the volcano, the weather is likely to change, with an increase in cold and wind. So we advise a wind-breaker jacket and fleece. Rain Gear is essential anytime of year. Sunscreen, sunglasses, baseball cap, non-cotton clothing, comfortable-capable shoes. Your BIG backpack is required. (or you can rent one from us for only $8. for the tour).
KNOW: Pre-Trip Meeting 5pm the night before your trip. (Sunday or Monday departures, Pre-Trip Meeting is at 1pm the day before your tour). All your questions answered and a chance to meet your guide and get the details of your trip so you can better be prepared. It will take only one hour. Be sure to bring remainder of payment if you have only left a trip deposit.
Porters available upon request.
