THE TRIDENT TOUR OX-TREME WARNING!

The Trident Tour is without doubt the toughest physical challenge we offer.  Consequently it is very demanding hiking and should ONLY be attempted by those in top physical condition. No exceptions! This is NOT a family fun tour so expect technical trails with slippery slopes, rock scrambling and steep terrain.

THE TRIDENT TOUR PART 1 : ACATENANGO AND FUEGO VOLCANOES

This excursion takes you up to the top of Volcan Acatenango, the most beautiful volcano in all of Guatemala, and a rather tall one too at 13,044 ft. / 3,976 m and to the Angry – Active Volcan Fuego (3763 meters). After we set up base camp we have an all night view of lava explosions from Fuego Volcano. Your guide decides which volcano to hit first; one for sunset and the other for sunrise. So get some sleep and then wake before sunrise and hike with just a small bag and some water/snacks to the peak of one of these mighty volcanoes.

Then either head up to the summit of Acatenango Volcano or down the steep slopes to the saddle and up onto the knife-ridge of Volcan Fuego. Finally, finish your trek with a beautiful high-alpine traverse descending around the two peaks of Volcan Acatenango. Then head back to Antigua, Guatemala for a quick rest before heading out to Volcan Pacaya.

THE TRIDENT TOUR PART 2: PACAYA VOLCANO

Next you head to Volcan Pacaya for an overnight excursion; this is absolutely the best way to see the volcano. When the sun sets, our small group of campers toast the sunset with a cup of wine and watch as the hoards of tourist rush off the mountain before it gets too dark. We then relax with a hot meal at our camp. After everyone is gone and night is upon us, we venture into the lava fields in search of recent lava flows and “HOT” spots where we can roast marshmallows. Experience Pacaya Volcano the right way; spend as much time on the volcano as you want.

In conclusion if you manage to complete The Trident Tour it will be a truly unforgettable experience and you will have done some of the best volcano hiking Guatemala has to offer!

The Trident Tour: How difficult is it?

The volcanoes in Guatemala are on average the steepest volcanoes in the world and on this tour you will hike three of them! It is in our OX-Treme category for a good reason; it is a tough tour and you need to be in good physical and mental shape to complete it. Having said this it is a very rewarding tour and offers some of the best volcano hiking in Guatemala and if you have a good attitude you are likely to be able to finish this tour. We advise you to prepare well and be in Antigua, Guatemala which has an elevation of 1500m (or somewhere with a similar elevation) for at least 48 hours before attempting The Trident Tour. This will give your body time to acclimatize. We have found over many years of experience that poor acclimatization is the main reason behind people finding the tours difficult.

** Please note that this itinerary can change depending on a variety of factors (weather conditions, group ability etc). Your professional guide will always prioritize the safety of the group.
